Servia Joins DDR
|
Newman/Haas Racing was founded in 1982 by Paul Newman and Carl Haas and began competing in CART in 1983. The team earned eight titles, which included 107 wins and 109 poles. The sudden shutdown of Newman/Haas Racing late last year was due to the failing health of the teams co-founder, Carl Haas.
The announcement on January 17, made by Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, comes after Servia lost his sponsorship hopes – shattered by the unpredicted resignation of his former team. Oriel stated that shortly after a discussion with Bernadette Haas, Carl Haas’ wife, he received the news via telephone that the team was shutting down and it was “time for him to move on.”
Servia Joins DDR – His Story: From Go-Karts to IndyCar
And moving on he is; right over to the DDR Racing club. Oriel holds a degree in mechanic engineering and has been racing since he was a child. He started by participating in the local go-kart racing circuit up to the age of nineteen. Immediately after, he took part in several Formula 3 championships.
He got his chance to prove his race savvy shortly after he began racing at the Dayton Indy Lights series in the U.S. back in 1998. Only a year after his arrival in the series, he won the Indy Lights championship beating out his rival, Casey Mears; who was right behind him.
After his victory, Servia joined the PPI Motorsports team in the Champ Car series, with his co-pilot & teammate, Cristiano da Matta. Servia went on to race for Sigma AutoSport, Patrick Racing, Dale Coyne Racing and he even practiced for the 2002 Indianapolis 500 for both Walker Racing and Conquest Racing.
Trying to Move On: Servia Joins DDR
Servia has also expressed his deepest regrets at the loss of Dan Wheldon from the last season. The pilot was killed last October when he succumbed to his injuries following a 15-car pileup during lap 11 of the IZOD IndyCar World Championship at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He stated that the tragedy is a significant detriment to the series and that no one was prepared for the loss of the charismatic champion or prepared to recover from the news. He also expressed his hopes that the sport would continue, but promote the safety of both pilots and spectators.
Driving a $4 Million Lotus: Servia Joins DDR
Dreyer & Reinbold Racing is a Lotus partner team that competes in the open wheel IndyCar Series, which is co-owned by former driver Robbie Buhl with Indianapolis BMW, Infiniti, Volkswagen and Maserati dealer Dennis Reinbold.
The organization has also spent many thousands of hours promoting “Racing for Kids”, a youth charitable foundation in the United States. The team is placing their hopes in the brand new Lotus engine and placing the weight on the skills of their newly acquired Rank 4 IndyCar driver, Oriol Servia.
